box joints

I have finished all the box joints for three drawers and cut the dados on the inside of the drawer sides and ends. The dados will accept the solid oak drawer bottoms, which were cut to size and have now been fitted. The exact location (depth) of the drawer bottoms with respect to the box joints was tricky. As the sides and ends have been oversized (wrt height) I was able to cut the dados such that they did not straddle two box joints and become visible on both the sides and ends. The dado is visible on the drawer front, barely visible in the attached photo, but as it will accept a "finished" false front, the dados will not show. I will plug the small holes on the drawer backs. Before glue up I will size the height of the drawer backs and sides so they fit the openings in the frame of the desk. As the bottoms are solid oak, it was necessary to pay close attention to the "edge fit" of the three boards used to make each bottom. Edge grain oak and boards that were seasoned in excess of ten years were used. The "squarely jointed" edges also ensured that the finished bottom did not curl after glue up.
